HI-ACDA Executive Committee
The Executive Committee of Hawaiʻi ACDA is a dedicated group of volunteer leaders committed to advancing the art of choral music in the state of Hawaiʻi. This committee is comprised of key officers who work collaboratively to provide strategic direction and oversee the implementation of its initiatives. The Executive Committee ensures Hawaiʻi ACDA remains responsive and agile, fostering a vibrant choral community throughout Hawaiʻi.

Christopher Serrano
President
Mr. Christopher Serrano is the Music Instructor at Ala Wai Elementary School and currently serves as President, Elementary Festival Chair, and Webmaster for the Hawai‘i Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. He holds a B.A. in General Music from Jacksonville State University, a PBSCE Certificate in K–12 Music Education from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and a Kaʻohekani Hawaiian Music Certificate from Windward Community College. He also holds certifications in both Kodály and Orff-Schulwerk approaches to music education.

As a performer and conductor in Hawaiʻi, Mr. Serrano has collaborated with a variety of ensembles, institutions, and organizations across Oʻahu, including the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Hawai‘i Pacific University, Central Union Church, Early Music Hawaiʻi, and, from 2020 to 2024, served as Music Director at Church of the Crossroads. His work in these settings reflects a wide-ranging repertoire that spans early, contemporary, and multicultural traditions.
Mr. Serrano has been recognized for his leadership in both classroom and community settings. At Ala Wai Elementary, he has helped establish a comprehensive music curriculum for grades Pre-K through 5, actively contributes to school-wide initiatives supporting Hawaiian cultural education, and launched afterschool programs including the Menehune Singers, an auditioned elementary choir. In recognition of his contributions, Mr. Serrano was named “Teacher of the Year” in 2024 by the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset, reflecting his commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, creative exploration, and elemental music-making. Additionally, he has served as an adjudicator for the 2026 Western ACDA Conference, demonstrating a continued commitment to building inclusive, community-centered choral experiences and advancing music education across Hawai‘i and the broader ACDA region.

Alec Schumacker
Vice President
Dr. Alec Schumacker is the Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He presently serves as the Vice President of the Hawai‘i Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. He completed his DMA in Choral Conducting at the University of Miami, where he studied with Joshua Habermann and Karen Kennedy.

An active educator and sought-after presenter, Alec delivered lectures at the 2023 and 2019 International Kodály Symposia in Los Angeles and Malaysia, the 2020 Western Division ACDA conference in Salt Lake City, the 2018 and 2016 Asia Kodály Symposia in Taiwan, the 2017 National ACDA conference in Minneapolis, and various others. His written work on incorporating popular music in the choral curriculum was recently published by GIA in the textbook Becoming Musical.
An award-winning composer and arranger, Alec’s choral music is published by Alliance Music Publications, earthsongs, Hinshaw Music, Santa Barbara Music Publishing, and World Projects.

Aaron Scholtz
President-Elect
Mr. Aaron Scholtz serves as the Choir Director at Waipahu High School and as Secretary for HI-ACDA, and holds a Bachelors of Education in Music from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Since 2016, the choral program at WHS has more than doubled in enrollment under his direction and has flourished from a single group to three thriving choral ensembles representing various levels and skill. Since Fall 2024, he has also served as a lecturer at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu, where he leads the University Chorale.

The WHS choirs have consistently received high marks for ensemble performance and music literacy at various festivals, such as the Maui Choral festival in 2020, where Aaron served as the director for the festival choir. Prior to his tenure at Waipahu, Aaron served at Kapolei High School from 2012 to 2016, where his roles included Choir and Band Director, Assistant Marching Band Director, and Fine Arts Department Head. During his time at KHS, Aaron coordinated multiple events including the Kapolei Marching Band Festival and the Kapolei Choral Festival.Beyond his educational contributions, Aaron has performed locally and internationally with the Voices of Aloha, participating in tours to the Philippines (2014), Montreal to New York (2016), and Spain (2018). Outside of music, Aaron is also an active volleyball coach, working with young athletes ages 8 to 18 in various capacities.

Sarah Young
Secretary
Ms. Sarah Young is the Director of Choirs at Central Union Church and teaches middle school chorus at Le Jardin Academy. At Central Union, she prepares and programs for the Chancel Choir, Ke Aloha Pau ‘Ole, and the Hawai’i Nui Chorale. At Le Jardin Academy, Sarah turns middle schoolers into lifelong arts supporters through choral music.

Previously, Sarah was the music director at St John Vianney School in Kailua, directing all levels of band, orchestra, and choir, and teaching general music for grades PK-8. Sarah received a BM in Music Education from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, with minors in Psychology of Education and General Communications. Her conducting mentors include Dr. Karen Kennedy and Dr. Corin Overland.

Michael Lippert
Treasurer
Mr. Michael Lippert has served ACDA chapters for over 25 years in New York and Hawaiʻi in many capacities, including state regional representative, Hawaiʻi state president, webmaster, R&R chair for High School Choirs and festival coordinator.

He is a music educator at Punahou School, teaching choir, guitar, and creative music classes, serving as the K-12 Chair (Academy) for the Music Department. He holds a B.M.E. and M.M. in Conducting from Ithaca College with additional studies at the Marta Sanchez Dalcroze Training Center, Kodály Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and CircleSongs with Bobby McFerrin, in addition to degrees in Creative Writing and Social and Decision Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University.

Wanda Gereben
Associate Treasurer
Ms. Wanda Gereben has been a choral director and in the field of music education in Hawaiʻi for fifty plus years. A life member of the national American Choral Directors Association, she co-founded the Hawaiʻi Chapter of ACDA in 1975. She served twice as the President of the Hawaiʻi Chapter and is presently on the Executive Board, serving as Treasurer since 2007. She also served as the regional chairperson of the National Standing Committee on Children’s Choruses for ACDA and remains a life member of the Hawaiʻi Music Educators Association.

Her many accomplishments and contributions to the performing arts community include:
Chairman of the Music Department of St. Andrew’s Priory School for 25 years. She developed and supervised a K–12 music curriculum that included choral, band, orchestra, and general music. In 1985, as an administrator, Wanda created the Queen Emma Center as the community service non-profit arm for the school. This included the development of the music and dance schools, early morning family breakfast program, after school care, and co-ed summer school. She led the school’s purchase of the Queen Emma Preschool and Camp Timberline.
Church musician in Hawaiʻi for 30 years. Wanda served as choir director at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in ʻAiea, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Honolulu, and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Kailua.
Founder and Artistic Director of the Hawaiʻi Children’s Chorus. In 1979 she produced two commercially successful recording albums with Hawaiian artists Leon & Malia. From 1980–1985, she served as the Artistic Director of the Honolulu Chorale and produced a Christmas recording album in collaboration with Honolulu soprano Mary Ann Bailey.
Founder and Executive Director of the Pacific Rim Children’s Chorus Festival. Produced annually in Honolulu from 2001–2010, this event brought 300+ young singers to Hawaiʻi each year to learn and experience the choral music and cultural traditions of countries around the Pacific Rim.
Owner of Group Travel Services Hawaiʻi, LTD until 2012. The company specialized in serving performing music groups traveling to Hawaiʻi.
Patron of the performing arts in Hawaiʻi. Wanda has served on the Advisory Boards of the Hawaiʻi Youth Opera Chorus and the Oʻahu Choral Society. She was also a member of the Board of Trustees for the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.
Published choral arrangements with Hal Leonard Music Publications. She devotes much of her time and energy to expanding awareness and knowledge of the different choral music traditions throughout the Pacific region.
Personal interests include teaching morning water aerobics classes at the Nuʻuanu YMCA, international travel, and real estate investment.

Ben Nause
Membership Chair
Mr. Ben Nause is the Choir Director and Music Teacher at Island School in Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi, and the Collaborative Pianist at Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church in Hanalei. He currently serves as the Membership Chair of the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.

Ben received his MM in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and his BM in Music Education from Susquehanna University. Originally from Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, he has worked on Kauaʻi for the past four years, promoting choral and music education.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Ben is deeply engaged in both local and international music communities. He has performed abroad in Japan and New Zealand and volunteered at the 2024 World Choir Games in Auckland. At Island School, he also serves as the Enrichment Department Chair, where he continues to advocate for the importance of arts education in schools.
Ben is the Collaborative Pianist for the Kauaʻi Chorale, a 50+ member community ensemble that has performed major works such as Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Vivaldi’s Gloria. He has collaborated with several performing arts groups on the island—including Sing Out Kauaʻi, Kauaʻi Performing Arts Center, and Kauaʻi Community Players—in roles such as soloist, accompanist, and musical director.
He also serves on the board of the Kauaʻi Concert Association, an organization dedicated to bringing world-class musicians and cultural events to the island community.
In his free time, Ben enjoys going to the beach, hiking, and spending time with friends.
