Join us as we launch HI-ACDA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration with a special two-day Professional Development Series designed to inspire, connect, and uplift our choral community.

Dr. Edith Copley

ACDA National President

Edith A. Copley, Honorary Guest is a regents’ professor emeritus at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff where she served as director of choral studies from 1993-2021.  She conducted the highly acclaimed Shrine of the Ages Choir and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and graduate choral literature.  The Shrine of the Ages Choir performed at state, regional and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education.  NAU choral ensembles under her direction also toured internationally to Western Europe, the Peoples Republic of China, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Estonia, and Latvia.

Prior to her NAU appointment, Dr. Copley taught secondary choral music for seven years in the Midwest and four years overseas at the American International School in Vienna, Austria.  While completing her doctoral degree in choral conducting at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, she served as the assistant and interim principal conductor of the May Festival Chorus, one of the oldest symphony choruses in the nation that regularly performs with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops.

In Spring 2016, Dr. Copley retired as music director of the Master Chorale of Flagstaff (MCF).  She led this auditioned 100-voice community chorus for 23 years.  She served as the chorusmaster for Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra for 27 years.  During that time, Dr. Copley conducted numerous choral/orchestral works, including Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem, Haydn Lord Nelson Mass, Orff Carmina Burana, Bach B Minor Mass, Mozart Mass in C Minor and Requiem, Duruflé and Fauré Requiems, and the Britten War Requiem.  

Dr. Copley is an active member of NAfME and a life member of ACDA. She has served in many ACDA leadership roles, including president of the western region, president of Arizona ACDA, state and regional newsletter editor, and interest session chair for the 2011, 2019, and 2021 national conferences.  She is currently the sitting ACDA National President.  

Dr. Copley has received numerous honors, including NAU School of Performing Arts Centennial Teacher of the Year AwardArizona Music Educator of the YearArizona ACDA Outstanding Choral Director Award, and the Weston H. Noble Award from her alma mater Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Dr. Copley has her own choral series with Santa Barbara Music Publications and is in high demand as a conference clinician, festival adjudicator, and guest conductor in the US and abroad.  She has conducted all-state choirs in over 30 states, and choral festivals in the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, Strathmore Music Center in Maryland, and Carnegie Hall.  She conducted the ACDA National Mixed Honor Choir in Dallas in 2013 and the NAfME All-National Mixed Honor Choir in the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in 2014.  Dr. Copley also has conducted international choral festivals in Germany, the Netherlands, Tasmania, Japan, Luxembourg, Australia, China, Turkey, England, Poland, Oman, Austria, and Paris.

Susanna Lauer

Washington, D.C. native SUSANNA LAUER is a dramatic soprano and longtime vocal educator with more than 20+ years of experience performing and teaching around the world.

Her operatic career has included solo performances with the Liverpool Philharmonic, the Emirates Opera, and the Washington Opera, as well as appearances at the Kennedy Center and with the classical vocal ensemble The 7 Sopranos. She has worked extensively with choral groups, student ensembles, and in professional stage productions across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East.

As a teacher, Susanna works with students across a range of genres—from classical and musical theater to contemporary styles—rooted in the technical principles of the Italian bel canto tradition and informed by vocal science. Her former students have gone on to study at top conservatories like Eastman, Manhattan School of Music, Boston Conservatory, and Peabody, and many are now singing professionally on Broadway and operatic stages.

After several years teaching and performing abroad, Susanna relocated to Hawai‘i in 2024 with her husband, three children, and their beagle, Honey. She currently serves as Choir Director and IB DP Music teacher at Le Jardin Academy in Kailua. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, a Master’s in Vocal Performance, and a Master’s in Teaching.

Dr. Joshua Habermann

JOSHUA HABERMANN is in his fourth season as Artistic Director of the Oʻahu Choral Society. Under his leadership, the OCS Symphonic and Chamber Choirs have partnered with orchestras, chamber musicians, dancers, and local and traveling choirs to produce concerts ranging from intimate renaissance pieces to choral-orchestral masterworks across the Hawaiian islands.

Habermann is in his seventeenth season as Artistic Director of the Sante Fe Desert Chorale, one of the nation’s premier professional chamber choirs. He was director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus from 2011 to 2022, and previously taught on the faculties of the University of Miami and San Francisco State University. He is a frequent guest with symphonic and professional choirs, and has led honor choirs and choral festivals in North and Latin America, Europe and Asia. 

Joanna Habermann

JOANNA HABERMANN holds a BA in Music from Pomona College, an MM in Choral Conducting from Butler University, and a Kodály Certificate from Texas State University. She teaches Middle School Choir at Punahou School and has taught K-12 Music and Choir in Hawai’i, California, Florida, Texas and Indiana.

Joanna has a passion for community children’s choirs and has worked with such nationally recognized groups as the San Francisco Girls Chorus, Indianapolis Children’s Choir and Miami Children’s Chorus. She is the Director of the Cantilena Ensemble of the Hawai’i Youth Opera Chorus and helps organize the annual Nā Leo Pili Mai Middle School Choral Festival. Joanna is currently serving as your ACDA Western Region R&R Co-Chair for Jr. High/ Middle School.

Claire Butin

Originally from the Houston area, Claire holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Performer’s Certificate in Flute from Indiana University, with additional studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London and Rice University.  She began her teaching journey with a Kindermusik certification in 2006.  In 2007, she was hired as the Preschool Music Teacher and Children’s Choir Director at Central Union Church and Preschool, a position which she held until 2017, when she moved to Trinity.  Over the past eight years, Claire transitioned from directing mostly younger students to directing the Coram Deo Choir, a 50-member choir made up of students in grades 7-12, which she ran from 2022-2025.  In addition to teaching, Claire is also a flutist with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, which she joined in 2004. She is married to fellow symphony musician Mark Butin, and they have three fabulous daughters, all of whom love to sing!

Ben Nause

BEN NAUSE is the Choir Director and Music Teacher at Island School in Lihue, Kaua’i, and the Collaborative Pianist at Wai‘oli Hui‘ia Church in Hanalei. Ben is excited to be the Musical Director for HCT’s The Music Man!

Ben received his Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and his Bachelors of Music in Music Education from Susquehanna University. Originally from Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, he has worked on Kaua’i for 5 years promoting a passion for performing and choral education.
Ben is the Collaborative Pianist for the Kaua’i Chorale, a 50+ member community ensemble that has performed major choral works and pop classics. He has collaborated with several
performing arts groups on the island—including Sing Out Kaua’i, Kaua’i Performing Arts Center, Hawaii Children’s Theatre and Kaua’i Community Players—in roles such as soloist,
accompanist, and musical director.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Ben is deeply engaged in both local and international music communities. He has performed abroad in Japan and New Zealand and has volunteered
at the 2024 World Choir Games in Auckland. At Island School, he also serves as the Enrichment Department Chair, where he continues to advocate for the importance of arts
education in schools. He also serves on two executive boards here in the state of Hawaii. Here on Kauai, he is a part of the Kaua‘i Concert Association, an organization dedicated to bringing world-class musicians and cultural events to the island community. He currently serves as the Membership Chair of the Hawai‘i Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association where he promotes and connects members of the organization across all the islands. Both of these organizations benefit Ben’s love for important community bonding. In his free time, Ben enjoys going to the beach, hiking, playing Pokemon, and following the Philadelphia Phillies in the MLB.
